When all is said and done, Sum 41 will probably go down as one of the best and baddest punk rock bands to ever take the stage. Wednesday's performance in the intimate Cambridge Room at the Dallas House of Blues was no exception, and highlighted why this year's No Personal Space Tour may go down as one of their best in years!
Where do I begin? Arriving at the venue, I was a little confused because the Cambridge Room at the Dallas House of Blues was so small. Almost a year ago to the day, Sum 41 sold out the big room and it was such a wild show. It took me a minute but then I remembered the name of the tour, No Personal Space. Everything made sense again and I was pretty stoked to be right up in front of the action. During one of the song breaks, Deryck Whibley made a comment about wanting to play shows like they did when they first started. From the looks of this show, they sure meant it. Let’s dive in...
The opening act, Assuming We Survive, is a band I have seen probably three or four times and they always put on a great show. They are exciting from a photo perspective because the lead singer, Adrian Estrella, likes to interact with the photographers. Their energy was super high, and the crowd seemed to really be digging it. The one song that I always notice when watching them perform is “Make It Out Alive”, because of those sick melodies in Adrian’s voice and the lead guitar. This tour could mean big things for AWS because they have a lot of talent in that band and I suspect they will make some big waves in the industry soon.
Following AWS was the highly anticipated rock stars from Ontario Canada, Sum 41, and they definitely made you wait for it. Lights went dim, some rock hits started playing, and the stage lights started doing their thing. What felt like forever finally came to an end and one-by-one they started flooding on to stage. Last but not least, Deryck Whibley walks out on stage and immediately goes into “No Reason” and immediately got the crowd on their feet. “Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!” screamed the crowd, and at that point I knew this was going to be a great show. The late 90s rock band came out and shut it down with each and every song. Of course they had to play one of their newest tracks, “Out For Blood” and it went hard. It’s so impressive how after all the hits they put out, they can still make a solid rock song. And the way Dave Baksh hits the solo towards the end of the song was such a surprise but such a great addition to a fantastic song.
Sum 41 continued to put on a great show and then they surprised the audience with a first ever performance of “Jessica Kill”. The fast-paced tune got the audience amped up. They also covered Pink Floyd's “Another Brick in The Wall” intro to “Fake My Own Death” and that was pretty killer. Outside of the encore, I think my favorite moment of the show was when Deryck slowed it down and played “With Me” acoustically. You could feel the energy in the small room, and I think that is what music is all about. They went on to play even more classic hits like, “In Too Deep”, “Still Waiting”, and encored with “Fat Lip”.
Overall this is a show you don’t want to miss when it comes to a city near you. Sum 41 will go down as one of the greats and there is something to say about their talent and live performances. As always, rock on my friends!

Making up half of the acclaimed latin rock guitar virtuosos, Taalbi Brothers, Bronson has written and performed music featured on the season 4 finale of AMC’s Emmy® Award-Winning drama Breaking Bad, accomplishing 2:30 of constant airplay to millions of viewers. The song "Freestyle" was released in 2009 and reached #2 on the iTunes world music charts. The title track from the brothers’ following EP, Ameksa, was then handpicked by Derek Hough for a dance on the ABC show Dancing With The Stars. The song was remixed by EDM group and production team, District 78. The Ameksa EP was released in 2010 and held the #5 position on iTunes’ World Music charts for 2 weeks.
Today Bronson is heard carrying over some of the more adventurous qualities that instrumental music tends to have, into his first official release as Bronson Wisconsin, Like a Storm. Madison, Wisconsin’s own La Follette High School orchestra class tune their instruments, preparing us for the title track. Elements of mariachi, surf, country, indie and classic rock feed off each other while taking turns in the light through the next ten songs as the listener is ushered into unexpected settings. Elementary school when they lost their first crush. A Lonely car past four in the morning driving through the Pennsylvania fog twelve hours from home. In their new apartment, dimming the bedroom lights and confronting their lover as they set their alarm for work in the morning.
The album begins its end on a grand note, basking in a completely re-imagined rendition of the epic song, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. As the final moments of this careful collection of layers and reflections become inevitable, the listener is seduced into a daze of melancholy chords and a haunting piano that seems to suggest what we might be hearing from in the future.
Sometimes I forget there are still people out there waiting for their favorite bands from back in the day to release new music. I know I will be that way when I get older and my favorite bands may not be releasing music as much or in many cases may have broken up. It’s crazy how good music can come and go in a flash, but that doesn't always have to be the case. I think Whitesnake is a great example of this. They are an amazing talented band that has reinvented themselves over and over since their inception in the late 70's and have ultimately withstood the time Their classic 80's sound helped pave the way for the rock music we hear today, and should be considered a clear road-map for any band looking for a long and successful career in the music biz. Kicking off yet another world tour, Whitesnake is celebrating their 40th anniversary with their long-awaited 13th studio album, Flesh & Blood, coming out on May 10th. It’s amazing to me that a band can keep a run going like this for so long, but these guys have done it, and in a way that other bands envy. Yeah, I’m sure there were some tough times along the way as band members sometimes come and go, but it doesn’t change the fact that they can still put together a fantastic record and tour like its 1987.
At first listen, I really didn’t know exactly how to feel about Flesh & Blood not being an avid Whitesnake fan. I'd heard some of their classics like "Slip of The Tongue" and "Slow and Easy". However, I was unfamiliar with the majority of their catalog. After taking this one for a few spins around the block, I can honestly say I was officially 'Snakebitten'! This record gave me a new found respect for the talent each of these musicians have, and would stack them up against any band performing today. Flesh & Blood has a very raw feel to it and you can tell they went in there and gave it their during the recording sessions. I think the first thing that caught my ear were the insane guitar solos Joel Hoekstra was slinging in each song. It’s phenomenal what he can do with the guitar and how he brings the music to life so effortlessly. Add in Reb Beach's solid riffs and amazing songwriting, Michael Devin's thundering bass-lines, the drumming prowess of legend Tommy Aldridge, and the mercurial Michele Luppi on keyboards. Tying it all together are the powerful vocals of Whitesnake founder and frontman David Coverdale. Shake it all up and you get a unique rock n’ roll story-line that excites, engages, and makes you want to keep listening.
The song that stood out to me the most on this album was the title track, “Flesh & Blood”. From the moment I pushed play, I had insanely vivid flashbacks of listening to rock n’ roll with my mom in the car as a kid. It's one of those songs where you find your head unintentionally bobbing up and down to an insane drum beat while playing air guitar on your Ford's steering wheel. Lower the windows as you are cruising down on an open highway and its heaven on Earth. This one is probably my favorite on the album, although I'm sure others might have a different opinion seeing there is so much good music to be had. The guitar melody line in the chorus makes me makes me feel alive, as is the signature of any solid piece of music. It's an all around a wonderful track that sets the stage for an incredible compilation of soon to be Whitesnake classics.
I’d also be remiss not to say a few things about the wonderful mixing on this record. As I’ve said many times before, you can never beat a great mix because that is what makes the listener want to keep listening. I was impressed with the balance of sounds they used on throughout album and specifically on the track “Hey You”. The riffs don’t overshadow the vocals, and the solos are high but pleasantly inserted between beautiful guitar work. “After All” is another great example of this and highlights my point to a tee. It's a wonderfully crafted acoustic track that whisks listeners away to their happy place from the very first note. I really dig songs like this are feel they are always a pleasant surprise on rock albums of this magnitude, and when mixed right it's taken to a whole new level.
Overall, I think Flesh & Blood is a great album and believe Whitesnake fans are going to be very impressed come May 10th. It has everything a fan of classic rock would like and then-some. In a time where most new music from bands of this genre is predictable, stale, and in many cases falls short of expectations, Coverdale and Company drop an instant classic that is truly worthy of the Whitesnake moniker. But then again, would you expect anything less from the 'Snakes?

On Sunday April 28th, the Mile-High City hosted the 2nd annual Sabroso Craft Beer, Taco, & Music Festival at legendary Fiddler’s Green in Denver, CO. A near-capacity crowd made their way up to the amphitheater for an afternoon of great food, cold beer, and killer music headlined by punk rock legends, The Offspring. And if that wasn’t enough already, festival-goers were treated to ringside seats for some amazing Lucha Libre style wrestling and got to witness firsthand the legendary Takeru Kobayashi plow through an ungodly number of tacos.
Aside from complimentary beer tasting with 25 amazing breweries, festival-goers indulged in some of the most killer street tacos on the planet. Denver’s finest lined the Sabroso Festival grounds with their flamboyant food trucks, vying for a chance to wow attendees with their custom creations and ultimately take home the “Best in Show” award (based on celebrity judging and fan voting throughout the event). If you love tacos (and I do), this spectacle was truly heaven on earth!
Now, on to the music. One of the wonderful things about Sabroso is that co-producers Cameron Collins and John Reese spare no expense in ensuring that musical lineup for Sabroso is second to none. Year two in Denver was no exception with a solid lineup consisting of The Dendrites (a local Ska ensemble), Dwarves, Strung Out, Black Flag, The Vandals, Bad Religion, and of course, The Offspring. Although Bad Religion and The Offspring were solid (outside of a bit of rain and dropping temperatures), my favorites from this year’s show were The Vandals and Strung Out. Both captivated the crowd with amazing energy, a clean sound, and some crowd surfing antics that took their performances to a whole new level.
Overall, the 2019 Sabroso festival (presented by Rockstar, 805, Milagro Tequila, Jarritos, and Gringo Bandito) will go down in history as one of the coolest events to rock Fiddler’s Green this year. Whether you were drinking amazing beer, eating killer tacos, of jamming to some amazing live music, there was something for everyone at this year’s show. As the house lights went on and the live performances came to an end and, all I could think about was what an incredible festival this was. In a day and time where many shows like this over-hype and under-deliver, Collins and Reese pulled all the stops and exceeded all expectations for what many in attendance felt was a punk-rock festival for the ages. Looking forward to seeing how this dynamic duo tops this one in 2019 with their 3rd annual installment here in Denver.

As a music lover and photojournalist, I have followed Tech N9ne’s career since his early years and have bared witness to his meteoric rise in the music industry. His hard work and unbelievable business acumen paid off in spades, and he ultimately became the undisputed #1 independent rapper in the world. With 13 albums under his belt (and 8 additional in his collabos series), Tech has sold more than 2,000,000 albums worldwide and has toured extensively all around the world. Add in his now infamous Bou Lou Beer (a business venture with brewing giant Boulevard Brewing Company) and it’s easy to see why everyone under the sun wants to team up with Tech N9ne is some way, shape or form.
On Tuesday May 30th, Tech N9ne and his Strange Music disciples descended upon the House of Blues in San Diego, CA for one of the first stops of 2019’s It Goes Up Tour. Legions of fans (known as Technicians) showed up early for a meet & Greet as well as a chance to crash the barrier early for a chance to see Tech up close and personal.
The first opening act to take the stage on Tuesday was Los Angeles hip-hop artist know as Dax. Goodness gracious, the energy that this guy had throughout his 30-minute set was unbelievable. The crowd was on their feet and fully engaged from start to finish in a way that most openers might not be able to pull off. If you are a fan of real hip-hop, I’d check out Dax’s latest single, “Self-Proclaimed 2”. It’s straight fire.
Next up was Miami based hip-hop trio known as ¡Mayday! Active in the game since 93’, Bernz and Wrekonize along with percussionist extraordinaire NonMS slayed their set with a passion and precision rarely seen in rap these days. One of my favorites from ¡Mayday! has always been “Darker Shades” off of their 2012’s release, Thrift Store Halos. I’m happy to report that they absolutely killed it along with every other song in their set. These guys are what’s right with hip-hop today, and well worth the price of admission on their own.
As fans were just beginning to catch their breath, UBI from the CES CRU assaulted the crowd with a powerful set that literally rocked the venue to its core. He whipped up the now packed house into an all-out a frenzy that would set the stage for the rest of the evening’s festivities. After a raucous 30-minute set, you may have thought his was all said and done until Ubiquitous jumped down into the pit. Those lucky enough to smashed up against the barrier got serenaded by UBI with one final track that put an exclamation point on an incredible performance. Super fun set from one of Kansas City’s finest and a perfect segway to the main attraction Tuesday night, Tech N9ne.
Around 9:40pm, the lights finally dimmed, and a short video played signaling the arrival of Tech N9ne on the House of Blues stage. The place went nuts as he kicked off the show with “N9NA” of his latest album (of the same name). Krizz Kaliko then joined Tech on stage performing “E.B.A.H.”, and as always, this dynamic duo was brilliant. Over the next hour and a half, Tech N9ne put on a near-flawless show that seemingly blew the roof off of the House of Blues. Technicians were treated to a massive set consisting of over 20 mind-blowing tracks featuring classics like “Am I Psycho”, “Riotmaker”, and “Einstein”. These jams got even the most reserved concert goer out of their seat and on to their feet. Tech’s set finally ended around 11:00pm with a searing encore featuring hits “Caribou Lou” and “Hood Go Crazy”. Perfect way to end a Tech N9ne show and one I won’t soon forget.

He brought it on Tuesday evening and showed San Diego why he is considered one of the most incredible artists on the planet today.
We have basically skipped Spring and have jumped right into an early Summer thanks to the 2nd annual Back to the Beach Festival. Over the weekend about 30,000 ska music lovers and punk rockers took over the beautiful sands of Huntington State Beach for the 2-day festival for a good time. Back To The Beach 2019 had it all. The bands that brought the jams, the food vendors that covered a wide variety of options for everyone and sound that stretched on for miles.
The lineup included headliner Blink-182, The Used, Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, The Aquabats, The Story So Far and more. Plus some special appearances from Sublime With Rome’s Rome Ramirez, 311’s Nick Hexum and Save Ferris’ Monique Powell. One of the highlights of the weekend was Blink-182 playing their entire Enema of the State album in lieu to its 20th year anniversary.
I had a chance to speak with a SoCal local and guitarist, Dean Santos where he told me about his AMAZING weekend at BTTB 2019:
“My experience at Back to the Beach 2019 was magical! I know that sounds cheesy, but I got to see my favorite band, Blink-182, play Enema of the State! An album that was released when I was in elementary school and one of the first albums I bought and learned to play guitar to. This album means so much to me and it was such a surprise. My friends and I attended BTTB 2019 to celebrate my birthday. Hitting this kind of nostalgia with one of my favorite bands of all time was not expected. Hearing Blink-182 play Enema of the State was perfect timing, it was like I time traveled to when I was figuring out who I was and wanted to be. The lineup in general set the tone. This continued on to the following day. I was ecstatic hearing Anthony Green from Saosin and Circa Survive, Story of the Year and The Used! This was my emo phase that jump started my seriousness in playing with my own bands. Those sounds for me were The Story So Far and The Wonder Years. It was totally a glimpse into my own musical journey being played back to me on stage. The fact that the event was on the beach was just icing on the cake. The beach is where I used to drive out to and write songs while people watching and listening to the waves crash. Back to the Beach put me in a nirvana where I could jam out with my close friends and bandmates to music that means so much to us. I was absolutely elated throughout the whole weekend. The feeling I’m left with is a total recharge and I’m ready to go just like I did when I was younger going through my younger years and problems. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year!”
There was literally something for everyone of all ages. With beach games to play, a Lil’ Punk Zone for the kiddos 10 & under and sponsor booths with a hangout zone. Not to mention a ton of food options to take advantage of. With the growing number of eating trends, diets and ‘restrictions’ you are normally s*** outta luck when it comes to coming to an event like this, but this was no issue at all. The assortment of options brought all the carnivores, sugar craving, vegetarian and vegan eaters together in one happy, hangry-free place.
The only negative part I personally would have to say about the entire event was the sand. While you would think it is the perfect spot for a SoCal music experience, it really was a total pain in the ass. It’s hard enough to walk in the sand for a distance. Add in the weaving through crowds, carrying drinks or food or just trying to relax in general. If you’re not struggling in those areas, you are probably sitting on your beach towel getting sand kicked all over you by anyone walking by. And then there was the weather... Some might have thought the weather wasn’t ideal but again, personal thought is that it was perfect. We weren’t blazing in the sun all day. It was the right amount of cloud coverage and just when the moment was right there it was bringing the blue skies with it.
Overall, I had a total blast and was very happy for the opportunity to come out to the event. BTTB is a fantastic festival to highlight the very much alive third wave ska and punk rock genres. Thank you to Travis Barker and John Feldmann for kicking off an early summer vibe and creating this music love child Back to the Beach. We look forward to 2020.
