ALBUM REVIEW: ZAGGA - PIECE OF PARADISE

Written by

Zagga, born Austill Henry, grew up in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Jamaica. In his early years, football was his main focus, shaping much of his high school experience. He later explored electrical studies, but that path would only be temporary - his true calling ultimately pulling him fully into music. With Piece of Paradise, Zagga does more than deliver a collection of songs - he creates a feeling. From the very first moments, the album pulls you into a space that feels warm, melodic, and unmistakably Jamaican, yet accessible far beyond the island. There is a sense of ease in the sound, but underneath it sits intention. This is music rooted in experience - love, ambition, struggle, and escape - woven together with a modern reggae sensibility that never loses sight of its foundation. If you don’t find yourself smiling after listening to this album, you might want to get your heart checked.

“Smile Today” opens Piece of Paradise with a clear sense of purpose. It’s warm, melodic, and instantly inviting, but underneath the easy rhythm is a message that feels both simple and necessary - joy is something you choose, even when life isn’t perfect. As an opener, it sets the tone exactly where it needs to be. “Beautiful Day (Hey)” keeps the momentum going, leaning fully into the album’s feel-good energy. It’s bright, catchy, and built around a hook that’s hard to shake, but it never feels forced. Zagga taps into that everyday optimism - the idea that sometimes a good day is simply about how you choose to see it.

“War & Love” brings a deeper layer to the album, exploring the push and pull between conflict and connection. It’s still melodic and smooth, but there’s an emotional edge that gives it staying power. This is one I keep going back to. “I’m Alright” feels like a moment of calm within the album. It’s laid-back but purposeful, centered on the idea that even through struggle, you can still find your footing. Tarrus Riley’s voice adds a whole other layer here - smooth, rich, and full of soul - elevating the track without overpowering it. It’s not flashy - it’s real.

“Wifey” brings a genuine warmth to the album. It’s a laid-back love song that feels sincere rather than overdone, with Zagga keeping things simple and real in both message and delivery. It’s the kind of song that makes me think of my wife, which is probably the highest compliment I can give it. “Mama Say” carries a smooth, uplifting energy, blending message and melody effortlessly. Alaine’s beautiful voice adds a softness and depth that perfectly complements Zagga, giving the track an easy, flowing feel that stays with you.

“Right Man” leans into responsibility and commitment, focusing on what it really means to be there for someone. It’s smooth and melodic, but the strength of the track is in its sincerity. “Lead the Way” brings a sense of purpose back into the album, centered on growth, direction, and setting an example. The music carries a smooth, uplifting groove that supports the message without overpowering it. It’s uplifting without feeling forced, with a message that feels both personal and universal.

“All My Blessings” shifts the focus to gratitude, celebrating what you have rather than what you lack. The chemistry between Zagga and Chi Ching Ching brings a nice energy to the track, with a lively, upbeat feel that matches the message, driven by an upbeat rhythm and a fun back-and-forth between the two. “All My Life” brings a reflective tone, centered on journey, growth, and everything it takes to get here. The production leans into Jahmiel’s style, which works really well alongside Zagga’s, creating a natural blend between the two. Jahmiel’s voice adds depth and emotion, complementing Zagga perfectly and giving the track a strong sense of purpose.

“Would U” shifts into a more intimate, reflective space, built around questions of love, trust, and real connection. It’s smooth and laid-back, but the message carries weight, making it easy to sit with. “Xi” shifts the tone slightly, focusing more on feel and delivery than heavy message. It’s laid-back but confident, showing another side of Zagga’s versatility.

“Peace of Mind” closes the album on a fitting note, bringing everything back to a place of calm and reflection. It’s smooth, grounded, and centered on the idea that real success is found within. A strong, thoughtful way to end the journey.

Piece of Paradise lives up to its name. From start to finish, it delivers warmth, positivity, and a sense of ease that feels both genuine and earned. Zagga doesn’t ignore life’s struggles - he simply chooses to rise above them, and that mindset runs through every track. It’s an album built on gratitude, love, and perspective, and by the time it ends, you feel a little lighter than when it began. Piece of Paradise is the kind of album that reminds you how powerful simple, positive music can be. And if you don’t find yourself smiling by the end, you might want to get your heart checked.
